This is the original store of Newel Whitney. It was really cool to see the original wood flooring and some windows were original. It was neat to stand on floor that Joseph Smith once stood and other church leaders. This is where they held many meetings and where Joseph and his family lived for a short time.
This is inside the store. They found records that Newel Whitney kept and were able to fill the store with items that the original store would have had.
This is the saw. They could cut and entire tree into 2 x 6's in 15 minutes. I thought that was pretty darn impressive for the time period.
This is the Ashery. This was owned by Newel Whitney as well. They would pay people to bring in their soot and then they would put the soot through a process in which they could turn it into Pearlash. This would be sold to England to make glass and ceramics.
These are the Ashery's boiling vats. They had to wear leather gloves and aprons because of the caustic environment.
Here is the Kirtland Temple. This is owned by the Community of Christ formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was interesting to learn the history of the Temple. It was quite beautiful inside, but we were not allowed to take pictures.
After Kirtland we made to Andrew's sisters house and after dinner the back room filled with smoke and it smelled like burnt plastic. They have an older home so their was concern of the old electricity in the walls. We called the fire department and went outside. We were out their for a good hour, but kept the kids entertained by catching night crawlers. This is Callie with her cousin Gavin in the front yard and the firetruck on the street. Callie and Gavin are the same age and had a great time playing together. The firefighters determined it was the washing machine and said we were safe to go back in.
